( May
2005 #020)
For Immediate Release
CHADDS FORD, PA - This summer, the Brandywine River Museum invites children to become museum explorers. Designed for kids ages 3 to 14, Museum Explorer Mornings and Advanced Explorer Workshops feature adventurous museum tours followed by creative hands-on art projects to inspire every budding artist.
For children ages 3 to 10 accompanied by an adult, the museum offers Museum Explorer Mornings. Two sessions, 9:30 to 11 a.m. (session A) or 10:30 a.m. to noon (session B), are offered for each workshop.
Creating with Color, on July 7, explores how artists use color to make their pictures more interesting and eye-catching. After a gallery tour, children design colorful butterflies and other insects using a variety of materials.
Children attending the Museum Safari workshop on July 14 will be on the lookout for painted and sculpted animals throughout the museum. Following the
"safari," participants make animal sculptures using modeling clay.
On July 21, children solve art riddles and hunt for details in paintings during
Treasure Tales. After the mysteries are solved, treasure hunters will decorate boxes for keeping special treasures.
The Portrait Parade workshop offered on July 28 focuses on paintings of people throughout the museum. After the museum tour, children create self-portraits using pencils, pastels and crayons.
For children ages 10 to 14, the museum offers Advanced Explorer Workshops from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. On July 12,
Portrait Study examines techniques artists use to create likenesses of people. Afterward, participants experiment with pose and setting while creating self-portraits using charcoal.
During the Summer Scenes workshop on July 19, children examine paintings in the galleries to learn how artists capture details of the natural world. Then, after observing the landscape around the museum, they use oil pastels to create their own landscapes.
The workshops are free with museum admission ($8 for adults; $5 for seniors, students and children 6-12; free for children under 6 and Brandywine Conservancy Members).
Space is limited and pre-registration is required. To register, please call the Education Office at 610-388-8382 or send an email to
