Plant a Tree in the Laurels Preserve with the Young Friends of the Brandywine
(September 2005, #037)
For Immediate Release
CHADDS FORD, PA—The Young Friends of the Brandywine Conservancy will host their fourth annual tree planting event at the Conservancy's Laurels Preserve on Saturday, October 15 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Last year, volunteers planted over 150 native trees including red cedar, witch hazel, flowering dogwood, and black, white, and chestnut oak. As they grow, the trees will increase food and shelter for wildlife. In addition, the trees will improve soil stability and water quality of nearby streams.
The event begins with a ride to the tree-planting site, followed by a picnic lunch and children's activities. The $30 participation fee covers the cost of lunch, a three-to-five foot tree and protective tubes and screens. Advanced registration is required; please call 610‑388‑8315.
The Laurels Preserve was created in 1984 when concerned residents formed a limited partnership to save the King Ranch from development. After placing conservation easements on 4,600 acres, the partnership, known as Buck and Doe Associates, L.P., donated the remaining 771 acres to the Brandywine Conservancy to establish the Laurels Reserve.
The Brandywine Conservancy protects the Laurels Preserve and its wealth of natural and cultural resources and facilitates scientific research and environmental education. The Laurels is open to Brandywine Conservancy members Wednesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors to the Laurels are required to carry their Conservancy membership cards.
The Young Friends of the Brandywine Conservancy is a membership group of young adults dedicated to furthering the goals of the Brandywine Conservancy, its Brandywine River Museum and Environmental Management Center. For more information, visit www.youngfriends.org or call 610‑388‑8315.
