To accompany the 2006 Antiques Show, the Brandywine River Museum presents a special exhibition, Treasures from the
Sea: Sailors' Valentines and Shellwork, beginning May 27 and continuing through July 24. In the 19th century, shellwork was at the height of its popularity in America and abroad. Women used their leisure time to create shell compositions, and sailors returned from sea bearing shell souvenirs. This exhibition examines diverse objects made from shells and features many examples of the popular
sailors' valentine.
On Saturday, May 27, Diana Bittel will share her expertise in a lecture and tour of the exhibition. Her presentation will begin at 9:30 a.m., following a continental breakfast in the Museum Restaurant at 9:00 a.m. The price of the breakfast and lecture, which includes admission to the Antiques Show, is $20 per person.
