Brandywine River Museum Produces
Instructional Video on Tempera Painting
(February 2006, #011)

For Immediate Release

CHADDS FORD, PA—The Brandywine River Museum has released an instructional DVD on egg tempera painting. Breaking Eggs; Making Paint, a 70-minute film, provides a thorough introduction to this centuries-old medium.

Following the methods described by Cennino Cennini (c. 1370-1440) in his famous 14th century manuscript Il Libro Dell'Arte (The Craftsman's Handbook), artist and professor Hilton Brown gives a detailed demonstration while reconstructing a section of a 14th century painting by Simone Martini. Filmed in his teaching studio at the University of Delaware, Professor Brown demonstrates how egg tempera paint continues to be used today by creative artists using contemporary materials.

From advice on handling eggs to notes about rare pigments and special brushes, artists and students will gain invaluable insights. The film features a rare interview with Andrew Wyeth who speaks briefly about his techniques and feeling for the unique qualities of egg tempera.

The film is presented by the Brandywine River Museum as a result of its 2002 exhibition, Milk and Eggs: The American Revival of Tempera Painting, 1930-1950 and is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts, which believes that a great nation deserves great art.

The retail price of the DVD is $24.95 plus tax and may be purchased at the Brandywine River Museum Shop (U.S. Route 1, Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania) or online at www.brandywinemuseumshop.org. For more information call 610-388-8326.
