Wildflower, Native Plant and Seed Sale
at the Brandywine River Museum
(March 2006, #016)
For Immediate Release
CHADDS FORD, PA—Celebrate spring with the Brandywine Conservancy's garden volunteers at the 25th annual Wildflower, Native Plant and Seed Sale on Saturday and Sunday, May 13 and 14, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The sale will be held in the Conservancy's Brandywine River Museum courtyard, rain or shine. Admission to the sale is free. All proceeds from the sale benefit the Conservancy's diverse and beautiful Wildflower and Native Plant Gardens surrounding the Brandywine River Museum.
The garden volunteers present a superb selection of carefully cultivated plants for sale. No plants are collected from the wild; most are propagated by the Conservancy volunteers. Many are difficult to find in retail garden centers. This popular event offers a wide variety of regional plants and seeds that are suitable for all types of landscapes and ready for immediate transplanting.
Native plants featured this year include spring blooming Bluebells, Golden Alexanders and Jack-in-the-Pulpit; summer blooming Butterfly Weed, Tall Meadow Rue and Cardinal Flower; autumn blooming Mistflower, Zig-zag Goldenrod and several types of New England Aster. Also available will be ferns, including Ostrich and Cinnamon fern; grasses, including Purple Top and Little Blue Stem; and a wide selection of vines, trees and shrubs appropriate for conditions ranging from bright sun to heavy shade in wet or dry soils.
Many varieties will attract butterflies, hummingbirds and songbirds and are as useful for strengthening our local ecosystem as they are beautiful, low-maintenance additions to the garden. Wildflower seeds from the Conservancy's gardens and meadows, skillfully collected, cleaned and packaged by garden volunteers, will also be sold.
Available for purchase at the sale, Landscaping with Native Plants has been published by the Conservancy in a second edition. This ground-breaking book by Elizabeth N. du Pont on gardening with native plants was first published in 1978. The new edition ($19.95 plus tax) reflects advances in plant propagation, biodiversity conservation, invasive species management and more.
Conservancy staff members and volunteers will answer questions, give planting instructions and provide horticultural advice. For more information about the sale or becoming a garden volunteer at the Brandywine Conservancy, contact Mark Gormel at 610-388-8327.
