at the Brandywine River Museum
(April 2006, #022)
For Immediate Release
CHADDS FORD, PA — This summer, the Brandywine River Museum invites children to become museum explorers. Designed for kids ages 3 to 14, Museum Explorer Mornings and Advanced Explorer Workshops feature adventurous museum tours followed by creative hands-on art projects to inspire every budding artist.
For children ages 3 to 10 accompanied by an adult, the museum offers Museum Explorer Mornings. Two sessions, 9:30 to 11 a.m. (session A) or 10:30 a.m. to noon (session B), are offered for each workshop.
The Fine Lines workshop, on July 6, examines the use of line in art throughout the museum including in two special exhibitions, Andrew Wyeth: Master Drawings from the Artist's Collection and American Etchers Abroad. Afterward, children use scratch-art paper to make their own masterpiece.
Children attending the Sea Treasure workshop on July 13 delve into the wonders of the sea and other natural environments on a museum tour featuring the special exhibition Treasures from the Sea: Sailors' Valentines and Shellwork. Then, they create their own natural wonder using shells and textured materials.
On July 20, children discover creatures in and around the museum, including James Wyeth's paintings of birds, Anna Hyatt Huntington's sculpture of a panther and Andre Harvey's outdoor pig Helen in the Creature Feature workshop. Following the exploration, participants use collage techniques to assemble an imaginative creature.
The Art Adventure workshop offered on July 27 takes children on an amazing journey through the galleries in search of pirates, soldiers and fairytale characters. Afterward, they create a journal using oil pastels.
For children ages 10 to 14, the museum offers Advanced Explorer Workshops from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. On July 11, Drawing Details features a tour of the special exhibitions Andrew Wyeth: Master Drawings from the Artist's Collection and American Etchers Abroad. Students then learn to use careful observation to perfect their drawing skills.
During the Creating Characters workshop on July 18, participants view an array of interesting people in illustrations by N.C. Wyeth, Howard Pyle and other artists. Using these characters as inspiration, they use collage techniques to develop their own characters.
On July 25, young artists explore ways that the world is depicted in color in art during the Changing Color workshop. What is the color of a shadow, of water, of the sky on a sunny or cloudy day? Afterward, students conduct their own experiments with color using oil pastels.
The workshops are free with museum admission ($8 for adults; $5 for seniors, students and children over 6; free for children under 6 and Brandywine Conservancy Members). Space is limited and pre-registration is required. To register, please call the Education Office at 610-388-8382 or send an email to education@brandywine.org.
