the 39th Annual Antiques Show May 29-31

Special free talks by dealers shed light on antiques and antiques collecting

For immediate release:

CHADDS FORD, PA (March 18, 2010) - Thirty-one of the nation's most outstanding antique dealers will once again showcase a variety of American and English furniture, glass, metalware, ceramics folk art, quilts, Oriental and European porcelain, rugs, and other fine collectibles at the 39th Annual Brandywine River Museum Antiques Show on Memorial Day weekend, May 29-31, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., daily.

More than 120 museum volunteers will serve as hosts for this exceptional Antiques Show. All proceeds benefit the Volunteer's Art Purchase Fund which, since 1975, has added more than 200 paintings, drawings and prints to the Museum's holdings.

To accompany the 2010 Antiques Show, the museum presents a special exhibition, Crocks, Jugs, and Jars: Decorated American Stoneware (May 29 - July 18, 2010). This exhibition features an array of pottery demonstrating decorative techniques used by craftsmen during the 18th and 19th centuries when food in most American households was stored in salt-glazed stoneware.

Special Events:
The always lively Preview Party takes place on Friday, May 28, from 6 to 9 p.m. A delicious and creative selection of hors d'oeuvres plus carving stations, a seafood bar, and sushi centers will be available in the museum courtyard and inside. Jazz selections by "First Choice" will flow throughout the evening. Tickets are $125 per person and $100 for "Young Collectors" (ages 35 and under). The cost includes valet parking, cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, music, and show admission.

On Saturday, May 29 at 9:30 a.m., show-goers can take a guided tour of the Crocks, Jugs and Jars exhibition. The tour is preceded by a continental breakfast in the museum restaurant at 9 a.m. The $25 fee includes the tour, breakfast and admission to the Antiques Show. Space is limited, and reservations are required.

Dealer Booth Talks will be held on Sunday, May 30 and Monday, May 31 at 11 a.m., 11:45 a.m. 12:30 p.m. and 1:15 p.m. Lecture topics on Sunday include antique garden furniture, banjo clocks, collecting folk art, and antiques from Southeastern Pennsylvania. These 30-minute talks are free with Antiques Show admission.

The beautiful sounds of the Flutes and Friends Trio will fill the air on Saturday and Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. The flute, cello and harpsichord/keyboard trio will present an informal concert of baroque and light classical music including works by Bach, Handel, Mozart, Schubert, Stravinsky, Haydn, Bizet and others.
