ESCAPE TO N.C. WYETH'S MAINE AT THE BRANDYWINE RIVER MUSEUM
(May 2003, #025)
WHAT: The banks of the Brandywine meet the coast of Maine this summer in an invigorating exhibition at the Brandywine River Museum. Summers in Maine: Paintings by N.C. Wyeth features paintings and drawings inspired by Wyeth's annual trips to Port Clyde, Maine.
Port Clyde and environs, numerous islands and the gritty edge-of-life existence of local fisherman provided the artist with stimuli that invigorated his work and fostered his artistic development. Liberated from the restrictions of his commercial responsibilities, Wyeth was free to experiment with a variety of styles, painting techniques, and media. The paintings reflect the depth of Wyeth's personal attachment to the people, land and seascape of Maine, some of which are on view in Chadds Ford for the first time.
