N.C. WYETH'S THE GIANT ON VIEW NOW AT THE BRANDYWINE RIVER MUSEUM
(July 2003, #028)
WHAT: N.C. Wyeth's well-known mural, The Giant, is now on view at the Brandywine River Museum. For decades, this exciting painting has had special meaning for many people in the Brandywine Valley. On loan from the Westtown School in Westtown, Pennsylvania while the school undergoes renovations, The Giant will hang in the museumís second floor gallery through the end of August.
Members of Westtown's Class of 1910 commissioned Wyeth to paint The Giant as a gift for the school in memory of their classmate, William Engle, who died in 1916. Displayed in the schoolís dining room since 1923, the mural depicts six children on a beach gazing at the fantastical shape of a giant in the clouds. Five of the children were modeled after Wyeth's own offspring. The sixth child, on the far left of the canvas, represents Engle.
