Wildflower, Native Plant and Seed Sale at the Brandywine River Museum
(03/01 #029)

Celebrate spring with the Brandywine Conservancy's garden volunteers at the 20th annual Wildflower, Native Plant and Seed Sale on Saturday and Sunday, May 12 and 13, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The sale will be held in the Museum Courtyard, rain or shine. Admission to the sale is free. All proceeds from the sale benefit the Conservancy's Wildflower and Native Plant Gardens.

The garden volunteers present a superb selection of carefully cultivated plants for sale. No plants are collected from the wild; most are propagated by Conservancy volunteers. Many are difficult to find in retail garden centers. This popular event offers a wide variety of regional plants and seeds that are suitable for all types of landscapes and are ready for immediate transplanting. Native plants featured this year include spring blooming Bluebells, Sundrops, and

Wild Bleeding heart; summer blooming Black-eyed Susan, Cardinal Flower, and Butterfly-weed; autumn blooming Turtleheads, Mistflower, and several types of Aster. Also available will be ferns, including Christmas and Maidenhair fern; grasses, including Wild Oats and Little Blue Stem; and a wide selection of vines, trees and shrubs appropriate for conditions ranging from bright sun to heavy shade in wet or dry soils.

Many varieties will attract butterflies, hummingbirds and songbirds and are as useful for building wildlife habitat as they are beautiful, low-maintenance additions to the garden. Wildflower seeds, collected, cleaned and packaged by garden volunteers, will also be sold.

Conservancy staff and volunteers will answer questions, give planting instructions and offer horticultural advice. For more information about the sale, or becoming a garden volunteer at the Brandywine Conservancy, contact Mark Gormel at (610) 388-8327.

The Brandywine Conservancy and Brandywine River Museum are located on US Route 1 in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. The museum is open daily, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, $2.50 for senior citizens and students, and free for children under six and members. Group rates are available with advance reservations. For more information, call (610) 388-2700.
