Brandywine River Museum Registrar Wins Award of Distinction
(6/01, #031)

Jean Allman Gilmore, Registrar of the Brandywine River Museum, and Rebecca Buck, Registrar of The Newark Museum, were named co-recipients of the American Association of Museums (AAM) Dudley Wilkinson Award of Distinction on May 9, 2001 in St. Louis, Missouri at the AAM Annual Meeting.

Gilmore and Buck received the award in recognition of their many contributions to the museum registrar profession. The contributions include co-editing Museum Registration Methods (Fourth Edition), the definitive resource for museum registrars. Together, they authored many parts of the book, selected additional writers, coordinated the review of material by outside advisors, and conducted the final editing. Their combined effort produced an invaluable reference tool and made an immeasurable contribution to the museum field.

The criteria for the award are a commitment to the highest standards of the registration profession, a lifetime contribution to the field of museum registration, ideas or achievements for new directions or innovations in the field, and an inspiration to one's peers. Both Gilmore and Buck received many written nominations from their peers in support of the award.

Jean Gilmore has served as Registrar at the Brandywine River Museum in Chadds Ford, PA since 1982. She is responsible for the storage, shipping, and handling of all works in the collections as well as materials loaned to the museum. Gilmore handles insurance documents, loan agreements, photography, photographic reproduction, and labeling. Previously, she was the Visual Arts and Museum Coordinator for the Delaware State Arts Council in Wilmington, DE.

Gilmore received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English from Wittenberg University and a Master's in American Studies from the University of Wyoming. She also completed the Museum Studies Program at the University of Delaware.

Gilmore served on the Board of Directors for the Mid-Atlantic Association of Museums (MAAM) from 1995 through 1998. She was the Chairman of the MAAM Registrars' Committee from 1991 through 1992. From 1986 through 1994, Gilmore and Buck co-edited the Registrar, a journal published by the AAM Registrars' Committee.

Exhibiting American art in a renovated 19th-century grist mill, the Brandywine River Museum is internationally known for its unparalleled collection of works by three generations of Wyeths and its fine collection of American illustration, still life and landscape painting.
